LITTLE BEANS, BIG OPPORTUNITIES

The General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed 2016 as the 'International Year of Pulses,' emphasizing small pulse crops with big nutritional potential, such as beans, peas, lentils, and chickpeas. A series of events leading up to 2016 are kicking off the pulse theme.

On Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015, The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science and Bush Brothers & Company presented an inaugural conference, Little Beans, Big Opportunities: Realizing the Potential of Pulses to Meet Today’s Global Health Challenges,” at the New York Academy of Sciences in New York City. The conference looked at the contribution of pulses in healthy and sustainable diets, examined how pulses can make significant impacts on public health, and explored opportunities for enhancing these benefits broadly through food system innovations.

The A4NH director, Dr. John McDermott, was among the expert speakers for this event, covering Food Systems for Healthier Diets - The Essential Link between Agriculture and Health, in addition to serving on the Scientific Organizing Committee for the International Year of Pulses. McDermott was joined by IFPRI's Director for South Asia, Dr. P.K. Joshi, who spoke about Trends in Global Pulse Consumption and Production, and Factors Influencing Access of Pulse-Based Foods to Vulnerable Populations.
